Being an After School Leader

Theresa G.’s last performance at MTYP was as Mrs. Van Tassel in the musical Sleepy Hollow with MTYP’s After School Leaders Program. From October to January, Theresa and twenty-two other students developed their skills in singing, acting and dancing and then performed for family and friends on MTYP’s Mainstage.

After School Leaders is a free program for teens on Mondays and Fridays taught by industry professionals. The focus of each session changes from musical theatre, to film-making, to playwrighting.

This program, supported by Healthy Child Manitoba, provides students with free classes, meals and transportation. Some After School Leaders, like Theresa, have been involved with this program for years. We asked Theresa to share a bit about why she keeps coming back.

I have been attending MTYP’s After School Leaders program for the past four years. This program was offered in my high school and it made me interested because a few of my friends who were a part of it invited me. At the time, I really wanted to try new things and it seemed like the perfect opportunity, most especially because acting has always been of great interest to me.

This year, we did a production called Sleepy Hollow. As always, I had a great time performing at MTYP.  My favorite part in the making of the show were the Monday and Friday rehearsal periods where I get to see everyone. The community and environment that we have in this program is just so welcoming and supportive. Everyone is always willing to take the time to help each other improve.

Being a student at MTYP has showed me the value of being organized, committed, and being open to learning new things. I learned that being a “yes” person is very rewarding in a sense that it brings many opportunities. It has really helped me break out of my shell. I hope that MTYP’s future students will have the same positive experience that I had. I would advise them to also be open to new things that are out of their comfort zone.

I know that the experiences I have had here are something that I will use and carry with me throughout my lifetime.

The next After School Leaders Program is focused on Digital Film. From March until June, students will collaborate to write, direct and star in an original film. For more information or to register, email MTYP Theatre School Director, Kent Suss at ksuss@mtyp.ca.
